Luchtalarm is a meditative video portrait documenting the Netherlands’ air raid siren system, which is scheduled for discontinuation in 2025. Since 2018, the artist has been recording the monthly tests—heard every first Monday at noon—across Amsterdam, compiling these moments into a final work that culminates in what is meant to be the siren’s last activation. The project captures the alarm’s eerie resonance within the urban landscape, juxtaposing its routine normalisation against latent geopolitical anxieties. As Europe faces renewed conflict, the siren’s historical purpose collides with contemporary tensions, inviting reflection on societal complacency, preparedness, and the invisible thresholds between safety and crisis.
